2022: New Year. More of Him, Less of Me.

How to Grow Closer to God in 2022.

It is always refreshing when the new year begins. Many of us are ready to start a new chapter in life after all we’ve endured the past year. When I look over 2021, I think about how much closer I got to God in 365 days (regardless of the hard times I faced). I can’t help but think of 2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV. It says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold the new has come.”

So many of us create vision boards or create goals to accomplish for the new year. There is absolutely nothing wrong with doing that. I personally love to make vision boards myself. After all, the Bible says in Habakkuk 2:2 KJV, “Write the vision, and make it plain.” Therefore, when creating goals or vision boards, we must make sure that they are measurable, necessary, and important in our lives. As a Christian, God must be the number one importance in our lives (If not, then we need to re-evaluate our priorities.). Including God in our goals should be a way for us to grow closer to Him. We should desire to seek more of Him and less of ourselves.

I won’t lie like I’ve never made a promise to God that I would spend more time with him or seek His face more, then utilized my time doing everything else in the world. Even when the Holy Spirit convicted me about it, sometimes, I convinced myself that it was too late to change. In actuality, it wasn’t too late. I thank God for opening my eyes to see how valuable it is to have a true, authentic relationship with Him.

It took self-discipline, lots of praying, and prioritizing my schedule to fit around God (and not me trying to fit God into my busy schedule). When I began to spend quiet time with God daily, I saw the dynamics of my relationship with Him change. When I made it a commitment to push back my plate and fast fervently when faced with extreme circumstances or times I became too comfortable in my Christian walk, the Holy Spirit spoke to me in ways I never imagined.

Do you have a quiet time with the Holy Spirit every day? How do you prioritize your schedule to seek more of God and less of yourself? Remember, it could be in the morning, afternoon, evening, or night. For me, I choose to start my day with Jesus.

Do you fast and pray when you are going through spiritual warfare, tough times, or just a way to seek more of God in general? If you answered yes to all of those questions, great! Continue to grow your relationship with God and never get complacent. If you answered no to any of those questions, don’t feel bad. The new year is here! It is the perfect time to start fresh with God and make the right change in your life for the better.

Tips on how to seek more of God and less of self (flesh) in 2022:

  1. Start your day off with quiet time. That quiet time doesn’t have to be anything fancy or extraordinary. It can be the first 30 minutes to an hour of your day. Try listening to worship music or reading a devotional plan (Download the YouVersion Bible app for many devotional topics. Bible in One Year 2022 with Nicky Gumbel-Classic is the one I am reading on the app. Join me!).
  2. Get in a Bible-based church where you can expand your knowledge of the Word and fellowship with other like-minded believers. We are not called to be alone.
  3. Make it a habit to pray daily whether in the morning during your quiet time or before you rest at night. The more you pray, the better. When you’re faced with difficult situations, don’t delay to pray immediately. It doesn’t matter where you are. You can pray in your heart right in the grocery store. God wants to hear from you. It will draw you closer to Him.
  4. Another major tip is not to dwell on what went wrong in 2021. 2021 was a hard year for many of us, but we must look forward to the new. Isaiah 43:18-19 NIV states, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!” This verse should give us hope!

A Call to Salvation (Prayer)

If you’re reading this post and haven’t given your life to Christ, I invite you to accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Don’t wait another day to make it right. Don’t wait until your business flourish, your career takes off, or you settle down and get married, etc. We are not promised another day. Which means we are not guaranteed to wake up tomorrow. God wants more of you now, not later. Make it right today. Repeat this prayer after me below:

Dear Lord, I have sinned and came short of your glory. Forgive me for all the things that I’ve did, said, or thought that broke your heart. I no longer want to live in sin or be lukewarm with you anymore. I totally surrender my life to you right now on January 2, 2022. I want to seek more of you. Your word says in Jeremiah 29:13 NIV, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Lord, I seek you right now with all of my heart. Give me more of you and less of my flesh. Strengthen me to stay committed to my relationship with you. Humble me so that I may never be deceived to think that I am fine living without you. Keep me hungry for your presence. Fill me with your Holy Spirit in Jesus’ name, amen.

If you said that prayer and gave your life to Christ or rededicated your life to Christ after backsliding or being lukewarm, you just made the best decision ever! Thank you so much for reading my blog. Leave a comment below to share how this blog blessed you. God has so much in store for you. Don’t neglect the beautiful privilege of having a relationship with Him this year (and the years to come). Until next time with Wytinsea Writes! 👋🏾
